Why We Love Faroese Wool
“Ull er Føroya Gull”
Among the rolling hills of the Faroe Islands, short-tailed sheep have grazed for generations. Known as Faroese gold, their wool is symbol of cultural pride and craftsmanship.
The Colors of the Islands
Faroese wool mirrors the hues of the islands’ skies and seas—not a stark white, but a creamy shade, soft like ocean mist.
The natural colors of the fleece range from stormy grays to deep chestnut, and can appear as dark as the midnight sky. Each shade is a unique to this ancient breed and replicated in the earthy tones of Faroese homes.
What truly sets these sheep apart from other breeds is their extraordinary resilience. Their lanolin-rich fleece, naturally designed for survival, has a unique double layer: the durable outer layer (broddur) repels harsh wind and rain, while the soft undercoat retains warmth in winter and provides breathability in summer.
The result of our unique fibers is exquisite handknits that express Gudrun & Gudrun’s signature style, while ensuring warmth in the winter, coolness in the summer, and dryness from the rain throughout the year.
