Why we love Faroese wool

faroese wool

Faroese wool carries with it a story as rich and enduring as the Faroe Islands themselves. This wool has been woven into the culture and traditions of the islanders for centuries, serving as a symbol of resilience and a testament to their resourceful spirit. Unlike many regions that focus on selling raw wool, the Faroese have long embraced hand-knitting to craft garments that showcase their intricate designs and skilled craftsmanship to the world. But at the beginning of the century, this natural resource was being wasted, with people opting to burn wool rather than utilise it. We’ve tackled this by rescuing this beautiful material and turning it into creative

What sets Faroese wool apart is its purity. Entirely organic, it comes from sheep that graze freely on the islands’ rugged terrain, feeding on natural vegetation without the use of pesticides or synthetic fertilisers. This method honours traditional, low-impact farming, which helps maintain the islands’ rich biodiversity and aligns with sustainable, eco-friendly living. The result is a durable, high-quality fibre that holds its shape, even after repeated washing - though its natural odour-resistant properties mean you’ll wash it far less often.

Faroese wool is not just about durability; it’s remarkably adaptable. Infused with natural lanolin, a wax-like oil secreted by the sheep, it offers a unique balance of warmth and breathability. This lanolin acts as a natural insulator, keeping you cosy in winter and comfortably cool in summer, even retaining its warmth when wet - perfect for the unpredictable island weather.

Our native sheep are unique in their colour patterns. Boasting spots of black, different shades of brown and of grey, plus our personal favourite, a beautiful creamy white that sits perfectly between yellow and grey hues, to us, these colours are perfect as they are. In fact we don’t dye this wool and instead let its natural colour take centre stage.

Finally, this wool is biodegradable, so when its journey comes to an end, it returns to the earth, minimising its environmental impact. By choosing Faroese wool, you’re not just wearing a garment; you’re embracing a heritage steeped in sustainability and craftsmanship passed down through generations. It’s a celebration of a timeless connection between people, land, and tradition - an investment in both quality and the environment.
