The Faroese Way

From Sheep to Sweater

In the windswept landscapes of the Faroe Islands, flocks of short-tailed sheep roam freely, grazing on the untouched vegetation that blankets the hills. Their lanolin-rich wool grows thick against the islands’ harsh climate, a natural gift that has been cherished for generations.

Once a year, these sheep are gently sheared, marking the beginning of an extraordinary journey - one that intertwines heritage, craftsmanship, and sustainability.

At the heart of this process is Snældan, a small spinnery nestled in the fjord-side town of Strendur. Established in 1949, this family-owned workshop is the oldest of its kind on the islands. Passed down through generations, its workers bring unmatched expertise and care to the craft of spinning Faroese wool into fine yarn. Each strand is meticulously processed to ensure durability, softness, and quality.

Once the yarn is spun, it finds its way to the hands of skilled women knitters, each of whom we know personally. These talented artisans dedicate hours - even days - to crafting each garment by hand, blending precision with artistry. Their work represents the essence of slow fashion: a commitment to creating something meaningful and enduring, rather than fleeting and disposable.

At Guðrun & Guðrun, our dedication to ethical and sustainable practices shapes everything we do. From empowering our makers to preserving traditional techniques, every step of the process reflects care - for people, for the planet, and for the future.

The result? A timeless garment, designed with intention and built to last. Each piece tells a story of tradition, respect, and purpose. A Guðrun & Guðrun garment isn’t just something to wear - it’s a connection to the Faroe Islands, a symbol of thoughtful craftsmanship, and a companion for life.
